5Amazing boots!
By A. Porter
From what I can tell, all of Bates' boots are amazing. This is my second pair of this particular boot in the last three years. That may seem like a bad thing considering the price, but I wore the first pair out and then some. For someone that used to buy new sneakers every six to eight months or so, replacing a few years worth with these boots was a great decision.

I stumbled onto Bates' footwear a few years back and haven't looked back. They are, for the most part, waterproof out of the box (at least in my experience) so they give you a lot of flexibility. This particular model is wonderful. At five inches it comes to just above the ankle. I found this to be the perfect compromise between work boots, snow boots, and daily footwear. The only time my feet ever get wet is if whatever I'm walking in gets over the top of my boot, and that's pretty rare. No more jumping over puddles or kicking yourself for forgetting your snow boots when you left the house. And the traction is great, even on ice.

As with any footwear, you have to give it time to break in, which only took about two days for me. Aside from that, I rarely notice that I'm wearing them as they're barely heavier than some sneakers. (I would recommend finding them in a store though if you're looking for the steel/composite toe version. I always found that option hard on the top of the foot above your toes if you squat a lot, so you may want to try them out first.)

As for wear, they endure pretty well. The leather above the toes takes a lot of abuse, but you should probably pick up a can of polish to keep them looking nice (if that matters to you). The only reason I got rid of my original pair was that the heel of the inside of the boot was fraying and pulling out, but I blame that on how loose I wore them, not the craftsmanship. And very little damages them, I've spilled all kinds of paints and adhesives on them, and it's always come off without a problem.

Hope this helps!

2Lightweight, good fit, but poor quality construction
By Mr. H
I've been wearing Bates boots for a few years. Initially, they look great and fit great. Where the Bates fail is in build quality. I picked up these, the 5", to replace a pair of the 8" side zip boots that simply fell apart. Unfortunately, these too have come apart in an almost identical fashion.

While they are light, breathable, and fairly comfortable even in the big and wide size I wear, the sole seperates from the boot long before the boots have extended use. The sole wears very quickly as well. This pair of Bates first started coming apart at the toe. The poor quality cement seperated from the leather. This is problematic as both moisture and bodily fluids now have an easy entrance into the boot. I wear this for use in EMS and the lack of integrity for the boot presents a big safety risk. Had it just been one pair, I would attribute it to simply bad luck. But many recent pairs of Bates I tried all have started to come apart at the 6 month mark.

They do have some virtues that I like, even though I will not be getting another pair of Bates -- clean lines, professional look, and they are easy to put a bright shine on. There is a mild degree of water resistance. I've rinsed the sole of the boot off and found no water entrance into the boot.

This particular pair has a nasty habit of coming untied. I tried new laces with no avail. They always come untied unless you double knot them. This is something I've not noticed before. It's a rather unpleasant sensation to see your shoe laces danging across a hospital floor knowing what sort of nastiness lies beneath.

If you are in love with the Bates, try the 8" side zip. These seemed to last much longer than the 5" boots here. However, I'd recommend another brand of boots that provide a better quality product.

3Comfortable but not durable.
By SuperAwesome
I got these for my husband after reading about how comfortable they are. He works on his feet 10 hours a day, 6 days a week in food service. All other shoes he had tried began wearing out within 3m and were starting to look horrid around 6-9m. These managed to last him around 6m before he started complaining about them. Ultimately the sole separated from the shoe after 10m of use. He says they were still very comfortable even when they died and was even looking at buying another pair. Perhaps we will again in the future, but not before exploring other options to find something that can endure his work. These are the only shoes that have done this to him, most of the time it's the material that starts to deteriorate (from water, grease, bleach, etc, spills).

These shoes only got 3 stars because of that poor quality. The materials and comfort are great, but they either need some stronger glue for the soles or to actually stitch it to the shoe body.
